EXHIBIT I - SOILS INFORMATION
The proposed permit area is to the south of the old Airport Pit at the west end of
runway 9-27. The new permit area has been disturbed by the airport runway
improvements project contractor stockpiling sandstone material.
In the undisturbed area, the NRCS information describes the soil unit encountered
at the site:
Unit 142 Quazar, cool Varden complex
The Quazar, cool is found on mountain slopes and alluvial fans. The parent
material is alluvium and slope alluvium from andesite and/or colluvium derived
from andessite. The typical soil profile is:
0-5 inches Very stony loam
5-10 inches Very stony loam
10-30 inches Extremely cobbly clay loam
30-60 inches Extremely cobbly sandy loam
Other characteristics of the soil include classification as a well- drained soil. The
soil possesses a low available water capacity.
The Varden complex is found on mountain slopes from 9,200 to 11,400 feet in
elevation. The Varden soil is typically found on back and flank slopes. The
parent material is slope alluvium derived from non-volcanic brecia and/or
colluvium derived non-volcanic brecia. The typical soil profile is:
0-1 inches Slightly decomposed plant material
1-6 inches Extremely cobbly loam
6-15 inches Extremely cobbly sandy clay loam
15-31 inches Fragmental material
31-60 inches Extremely cobbly loamy coarse sand
Other characteristics of the soil include classification as a well- drained soil. The
soil possesses very low available water capacity and is nonsaline.
The two man-made structures within 200 feet of the permit area are the access
road and the airport boundary fence. The owner of these structures is the
Telluride Regional Airport Authority which has provided access for the stone
removal.
TSC has dug test pits to determine topsoil depth in the permit area. This
information is included in Exhibit E - Reclamation Plan.
Revised 05/06/11
