These dumps are low <br />grade ore that was mined at the turn of the century and contain fairly large <br />amounts of iron pyrite (iron sulfide), lead, zinc, copper, arsenic, and other <br />heavy metals. The main pollutant is the iron pyrite, which weathers into iron <br />oxide and sulfuric acid, causing the run-off waters to be highly acidic and <br />carrying lots of heavy metals. <br />Methods of clean u : <br />The only effective method, and the preferred method of the EPA, is to <br />remove the heavy metals so that they do not contaminate the surface and <br />ground waters. Venture Resources has engineered a plan to process the <br />mine dumps using a facility that separates the heavy metals from the host <br />rock, using both gravity and flotation concentration technology. The heavy <br />metal laden concentrates can be shipped off to a smelter for further <br />processing. A purified product of mainly inert sands and clays can then be <br />put into a carefully managed solid waste impoundment and reclaimed into <br />beautiful mountain property. <br />The other methods of burial/capping or removal to another area do not <br />solve the problem; they are costly and either hide the problem or move it <br />somewhere else. The financial burden is ultimately on the taxpayer. . <br />
