6.4.5(2)(a)
Revised 1/27/2011
DBMS Quest #1.0
(No waste asphalt or cement will be place in ANY PORTION OF THE EXCAVATED AREA OR ANY OTHER
• AREA OF THE PERMIT AREA UNLESS APPROVED BY THE DRMS THROUGH A TECHNICAL REVISION.)
Slurry walls are an integral part of the proposed reclamation plan. Following is a conceptual
plan for slurry wall construction and a typical Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)
program. If not available at the time of submittal of this Application, a set of detailed plans and
a detailed QA/QC program will be provided as a Technical Revision to the approved permit
application prior to construction. A preliminary slope and slurry wall design is provided in
Attachment II. Attachment II includes the Geotechnical Investigation conducted by CTL
Thompson for the project and information concerning slope stability, slurry wall and pit floor
construction recommendations.
Conceptual Slurry Wall Construction Plan
The following Conceptual Slurry Wall Construction Plan is based on a paper by C.R. Ryan and
S.R Day, Titled "Soil-Bentonite Slurry Wall Specification", Geo-Solutions Inc., Pan American
Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Geo-Institute and MIT,
Cambridge, MA, June 2003.
1. Slurry Parameters
• Slurry Test Methods;
? The following field testing methods will be performed according to ASTM
specifications and at a frequency as recommended in the Division's guide titled
"Guide to Specification Preparation for Slurry Walls and Clay Liners as a
Component of a Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Permit":
? Viscosity-Marsh Funnel
? Unit Weight -Mud Balance
? Filter Press
? Sand Content
• Slurry Properties When Freshly Mixed:
? The Viscosity-Marsh Funnel test will be performed to determine the properties of
the freshly mixed slurry as to viscosity. Viscosity is related to bentonite type,
content and degree of hydration. Unless otherwise indicated, the
Application/Operator will specify the use of "standard" 90 barrel yield bentonite
as specified in API Publication 13A, Section 5.
C
