PERMIT #: M-1978-056
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: April 15, 2011
The Division researched the well history through the records available at the Colorado Division of Water
Resource. The research indicated the McNamara Well #2, Well No. 23048F (the permit number was changed
to #267745 in 2006 when the well classification was changed from irrigation) is approved to produce 50 GPM
of water and the water can be used for ordinary household purposes inside one single family dwelling, fire
protection, the watering of domestic animals, poultry and livestock on a farm or ranch, and the irrigation of
not more than one acre of home gardens and lawns.
Tho Division staff met with Mr. Huff and Mr. Gastufson at Mr. Huff's residence to discuss the issue and inspect
the well. Mr. Huff stated the well is used for irrigation purposes only. The residential water supply is provided
by North Weld Water. The Division measured the well depth at 25.75 feet and the water level at 25.13 feet.
Mr. Huff stated the pump is set at 26 feet, so the Division's total depth measurement might be to top of well
and not the total well depth.
The Division staff met with Mr. Janes with Varra Companies to discuss the complaint following the meeting
with Mr. Huff and Mr. Gastufson. During the meeting, Mr. Janes called Joby Adams a Hydrologist with CRGS to
discuss Mr. Adams findings related to the complaint. Mr. Adams stated the well was impacted by the Durham
Pit mining operations. Mr. Janes stated a draft agreement to supply water to Mr. Huff was written and was
expected to be approved and signed by both parties within a week. The plan as of the inspection was to
provide water by an overland pipeline in the short term and construct a underground pipeline feeding a
recharge pond or redrilling the well as the long term solutions if the ground water level did not return to
historic levels following the completion of mining at the site.
Based on the Division's observations and the discussions with the parties involved, it appears the dewatering
activities in the pit located west of Mr. Huff's property and within 200 feet of his well caused the hydrologic
impact. The timing of the water level decreases in the well coincides with the start of mining and dewatering
in the pit. The pit was approximately 30 feet deep and being dewatered with a pump during the inspection.
No other problems were noted during the inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Christopher Varra
Varra Companies, Inc.
8120 Gage St.
Frederick, CO 80516
Cc: Rich Huff, Landowner
James Gustafson, Attorney
Tony Waldron, Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
Page 2 of 4
