CM0001758
Page 4
capacity. Appendix A contains the `Elevation/Storage Relationship Calculation Brief used to
develop the table.
3.0 CURRENT SITE STATUS
As shown on Figure 1, the Climax Mine is located adjacent to Highway 91 approximately two
miles northeast of Leadville, Colorado. Prior to the suspension of mining operations at the
Climax Mine in the early 1990's, CMC performed open pit mining to access a molybdenum ore
body. Figure 2 provides a Site Layout map which identifies the primary features of the Climax
Mine which consists of a series of open pits, tailings ponds, surface water impoundments and
mill facilities. Access to the Dam construction area is by a maintained county road that begins at
Colorado Highway 91 and extends west past the Dam area.
The Robinson Lake Dam currently impounds impacted surface water from the Robinson Lake
Tailings Pond, as well as clean surface water run-off from the lake's watershed area and
discharges from the Chalk Mountain Reservoir. CMC's long term water management goals for
the Climax Mine include containing impacted water (i.e., water quality that does not meet
allowable standards for off-site discharge) separately from clean surface water that meets water
quality standards to either be discharged from the site or managed for other. uses.
Construction of the Dam will separate impacted seep water from the Robinson Lake Tailings
Pond from clean run-off that will be stored by the Robinson Lake Dam. The stage of the Dam
will be controlled by the No. 1 Dam Pump Station designed by Wheeler and currently under
construction. The pump station will convey impacted water contained by the Dam back up to the
Robinson Tailings Pond.
Several areas within the footprint of the Dam's alignment will require sludge removal for
construction of a stable dam foundation. Sludge will either be pushed upgradient of the Dam or
hauled to the Robinson Tailings Pond (i.e., to be decided by the Contractor performing the Dam
work). In addition, seep and surface water discharges to the Dam's impoundment area will
require that the Contractor develop a dewatering plan for construction operations.
•
c. y-\cyp.s\c imu\wld-\6104rcp2.doc 11/07!96
? ?? - ssssssss? ? s_ sss.
Environmental
