3 CMC001637
Page 9
Tenmile Tunnel and West Tailing Delivery Line. These discharges can be
eliminated by rerouting the current discharges to Robinson Tailing Pond;
• Diversion/impoundment of the No. 1 Tailing Dam seeps and surface water runoff
from the No. 1 Tailing Dam (Section 3.1.4);
$' Draining the lake of poor quality water. This will be performed using the
existing pump house and conveyance piping;
• Construction of haul roads to support sludge removal;
• Removal of the 1.4 mcy of sludges by excavation and hauling to Robinson
Tailing Pond;
• Reclamation of haul roads used for excavation;
Revegetation of disturbed areas; and
• Placement of rip-rap along the dam face and shoreline for aesthetics.
Once reclaimed, Robinson Lake will be filled with freshwater surface runoff now collected by
the Chalk Mountain Interceptor trench. The Robinson Lake water quality is anticipated to
improve with time by natural flushing of fresh water.
1
Passive Reclamation
Passive reclamation of Robinson Lake will focus on the "wet storage" of the sludges within the
lake while allowing natural flushing mechanisms to gradually improve water quality. The
advantages of this approach are two-fold: 1) the reclamation of Robinson Lake will be gradual;
therefore, the "up-front" costs will be lower, and 2) the reclamation efforts can begin immediately
with minimal impact to the Climax Mine operations.
Passive remediation of Robinson Lake Iwill primarily consist of.
• The elimination of poor quality surface water discharges to Robinson Lake
from the Terunile Tunnel and West Tailing Delivery Line, which can be
eliminated by rerouting the current discharges to Robinson Tailing Pond;
and
L- Placement of rip-rap along the dam face and shoreline for aesthetics.
The centerpiece of this approach is the wet storage of the sludges. Several case studies (Bell,
1987, Ritchey, 1991, Kleinmann, 1991) have shown that wet storage can be an effective method
° .. ° Environmental
