Sherman <br />Executive Director <br />Vincent Matthews <br />Division Director and <br />State Geologist <br />Thank you for the submittal of the above referenced proposal. The proposal is for the construction of a pump station <br />and associated pipeline at the Climax Mine. Guided by Gary Slifka, Climax Molybdenum Company, I visited the <br />site on June 5, 2008. My inspection of the site was partially hampered by snow cover. <br />Geologic hazard mapping for the site indicates the site is underlain by colluvium, glacial deposits, and bedrock, • <br />which on gentle to moderately steep slopes is stable. Landslide deposits are found throughout the area and range <br />from smaller slumps in Quaternary deposits to larger, masses of bedrock that slid off glacial valley walls. <br />Geologic mapping shows east- to northeast-trending faults near the site. These faults usually show only minor <br />displacement with little deformation to the adjacent wall rocks and only minor accumulations of fault gouge. <br />The applicant's geotechnical investigation did not find any geologic hazards or soil constraints that would preclude <br />development. Although, the report includes recommendations for site grading and foundation design. The <br />recommendations outlined in the report are prudent and should be followed. <br />If construction occurs as proposed, and in accordance with engineering recommendations, the proposed pump <br />station and pipeline should not be significantly impacted by geologic hazards. However, given adjacent geologic <br />conditions, like faulting and landshding, if the plans change and construction will occur in areas with steeper slopes <br />or cut and fills slopes exceed engineering recommendations, additional slope stability analysis will be needed. <br />Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
