CM0001498
STAFF REPORT: Climax Mine File No. 1041-0072
BoCC Hearing Date: June 24, 2008
• FILE NO./PROCESS: 1041-00072; 1041 Permit
C?
PROJECT NAME: Climax Mine
//`/ t
LOCATION: Highway 91 - Fremont Pass
OWNER: Climax Molybdenum Company
APPLICANT: Climax Molybdenum Company
REPRESENTATIVE: Gary Slifka
STAFF CONTACT: Yuri Kostick
REQUEST: 1041 Permit to replace the Robinson Lake Pump Station and Pipeline.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Approval with conditions
1. SUMMARY
The Climax Mine, located on the continental divide 13 miles northeast of Leadville Colorado, is a molybdenum
mine owned and operated by the Climax Molybdenum Company (Climax). Climax is implementing a project to
upgrade existing water management, mining, and mineral processing systems, including the construction of a new
molybdenum processing facility in anticipation of re-starting active mining and milling operations in 2010.
The 1041 permit is for the replacement of the existing Robinson Lake Pump Station and pipeline
2. BACKGROUND & CHRONOLOGY
• The Climax Mine land holdings consist of 14,300 contiguous acres of owned patented mining claims, fee-simple
land, and land acquired through exchanges with the United States Forest Service (USFS). The Climax Mine
began operations in 1917 and has operated nearly continuously since that time, with some periods of curtailment
of production, including most recently in 1995. The current pump station was installed in 1936. The new pump
station will replace the components which make up the process water reclaim system used in the industrial mining
process.
All associated water facilities are sized to accommodate the project. The facilities include:
• Robinson Lake pump station building
• The 21,300-foot long pipeline
CHRONOLOGY:
The original mining operations were constructed in the early 1910's and began operations in 1917. The Robinson
Lake pump station was constructed in 1936. Again, the scope of this 1041 permit is specifically for the
replacement of the pump station and the pipeline.
3.
