make up from about 15 to 35 percent of the soil material. Representative
profiles of the Schofield and Peeler gravelly sandy loams, 25 to 60 percent
slopes, are included herein.
The Matcher series are sandy-skeletal, mixed Typic Cryumbrepts and
consist of well drained, sloping to very steep soils that formed in
granitic glacial moraines under a lodgepole pine vegetation cover. The
mean annual precipitation is about 20 inches, and the mean annual soil
temperature is about 36°F. Permeability is rapid and available water
capacity is low. Forest litter is typically about three inches thick over
approximately a nine inch thick grayish brown stony sandy loam surface
soil. The subsoil is a stony sandy loam. A representative profile of the
Matcher stony sandy loam, five to 25 percent slopes, is included herein.
Histosols occupy concave sites and relatively level areas along major
streams.. In the subject area they form a narrow band immediately adjacent
to Gold Creek towards the southerly side of the permit area. This type of
soil is composed of fiberous, relatively undecomposed material (twigs,
grasses, roots) ranging from about three to 16 inches thick overlying
material which ranges from silty clay to mixed sand, gravel and cobbles.
Typically runoff is slow and the potential for water erosion is slight.
-4-
