March 24, 2011 C-1981-044/Williams Fork Mines JRS
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE(cont.) -Williams Fork is planning on adding additional riprap along the bank of
the Williams Fork River by the supports for the rail bridge. Last runoff season some brush got stuck and caused a
part of the area to be eroded. This riprap will be placed by the supports to help protect them from further erosion.
-The 7-North Angle Well house and surrounding area were stable and in good condition. This well has not
operated since the mine went into temporary cessation.
-Pond 5A-P1 contained a small amount of water and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted.
-Ponds 5-P5, 5-P6 and 5-P7 are treatment ponds for the portal discharge(from pumping the portals). The water
level in these ponds was very low and they were not discharging at the time of the inspection. Joe Shoemaker
indicated that the pump died and Williams Fork has not been able to repair it. The pond embankments were
covered with snow but appeared to be stable. No erosional problems were noted.
PROCESSING WASTE/COAL MINE WASTE PILES—Rule 4.10 and 4.11 Drainage Control; Surface
Stabilization; Placement:
-The reclaimed refuse pile area remained stable at the time of the inspection. The area was covered with snow.
-The remaining refuse pile was also covered with snow at the time of the inspection.
ROADS—Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3)Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4) Surfacing and Maintenance 4.03.1(5)and
(6)/4.03.2(5)and(6)Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
-The haul road was plowed at the time of the inspection. The road was well maintained and stable.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS—Rule 4.15,Rule 3:
-Williams Fork has completed the removal of the fuel tanks from the bulk fuel and oil storage building at the 5A
portal area. They are also planning on removing the rock dust tank at this area and moving it to the twenty Mile
Mine.
-Last year the Division noted Russian Knapweed problem areas at the Williams Fork Mine. Moffat
County Mining will need to spray these areas and perform a detailed survey of the entire mine area this
spring to help combat this problem. Moffat County Mining will also need to spray the weeds in the fall.
This twice a year spraying will be needed until the knapweed has been knocked back.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: None
This concludes the Division's 24 March 2011 inspection report for the Williams Fork Mines.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 4
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 7
