Plans for use of the water treatment system were abandoned. <br />Dorchester, and subsequently EFCI, continued to discharge excess water <br />directly from Pond 2 into Magpie Creek. <br />As mine development progressed, increasing quantities of mine inflow were <br />encountered in both the north and south submain mining sections near the main <br />portals. Increased dewatering requirements resulted in increased discharge <br />from Pond 2 with accompanying elevated TSS levels, and iron concentrations <br />began to approach and occasionally exceed effluent limitations. Testing of <br />Freshwater Pond 3, which initially received dewatering flows, indicated water <br />quality within discharge limitations.
