THE SENECA II MINE LEASE SOIL SURVEY
• INTRODUCTION
An agreement was entered into with the Peabody Coal Company, Rocky
Mountain Division, to reexamine and map a large portion of the Seneca
II Mine lease, and to obtain and ship samples of soils and of 22 stock-
piles to the Peabody Coal Company laboratory.
Procedure The Contractor, Claude L. Fly and surveyors Fay M. Paxton and
Lynn J. Olsen met with SCS representatives at Craig, Colorado, and
obtained information regarding past surveys and soil series classification
in this vicinity. We then visited the Mine Company office, located on the
site and met with the Company Environmental Engineer who showed us over
the area and helped locate roads and trails, boundary markers and stock-
piles.
The field work was begun on the 21st of May and completed June 5. A
temporary work area was permitted at the mines headquarters and the maps
• and soil samples were processed here. Some 130 soil samples were taken,
described, labelled, boxed and left at the mines office for shipment to
the Peabody Coal Company laboratory.
The revised soils maps with sample locations, pedon descriptions (SCS-232
Forms) field notes and photos were brought to Fort Collins. On receipt of
the laboratory data from Peabody Coal Company, processing of final maps,
soil classifications and quality of topsoil criteria were developed.
Because steep slopes on this lease area make stockpiling by natural
horizons practically impossible, the soil stripping isopach has been
prepared to show the practical depths of stripping and the quality of
the stripped material. Field observations, pedon descriptions and labora-
tory data have been used to complete the survey analysis and develop
recommendations for stockpiling and reclamation.
u
-1-
