MITIGATION EFEgKCS
INPf2®UCTION
Information croncernirxJ the nature and locatiw~ of previous Frork canpleted
at SKP139 by WCRM other than the small amount contained in the Proposed
Sampling Program was not available to Nickens and Associates at the time
mitigative activities at the site conmenoed. It was, therefore, manda-
tory that we foll.aa the stipulations of that program "tom the letter."
As specified, mitigation of SRT139 was to proceed in three sequent phases:
Excavation, Monitoring, and Analysis. Although prepazation of a site map
was included in the analytical stage, that procedure was actually the
first performed at the site. Ccnsequently, the order of mitigative pro-
•
c~dures at SI1C139 wnsisted of Site !dapping, Test Excavations, Abnitoring,
and Analysis. Each of these stages is discussed separately and in the
order in which each occuiz-ecl. •
An expenditure of 416 person-hours (13 days x 8 hours/day x 4 people) was
realized in oanpleting the fieldwork portion of the project. A crew of
three individuals, assisted and supervised by the author, performed all
of the mapping, test excavating, and m~nitr~ring activities during the
entirety of the project. Approximately 4.5 cubic meters of dirt was
removed by shovel and trowel and dry screened by this four-person cx~w
during the eight days of hand excavation.
SITE MAPPING
Instrianent mapping of the land area to be impacted by topsoil raroval
eartrenced immediately upon arrival at the site; a total of 1.5 field
days was expended in obtaining the necessary measurements for wnstructing
a site map. This site map (Map 2) is intended to illustrate the locations
of local roads, all archaeological excavations, the area of topsoil remov- •
al, and the locations of all identified cultural features and artifacts.
20
