• features on the site warranted their assignation to the same temporal
period, viz. the Paleo-Indian Cody Complex.
The subsurface revery of a single basal portion of a McKean lanceolate
point suggested a Middle Archaic McKean Complex association, dated from
5000 to 3000 B.P. (Frison, 1978). This artifact was located approximately
10 an below ground surface, a level substantially above the in situ
features assigned to the Paleo-Indian period and suggestive of more recent
utilization of the aroma. Although no features were found in direct
association with this McKean point, a secondary cultural affiliation was
felt to be viable.
Archaeological testing at site SAP139 suggested the possibility of multi-
ple occupations and a lengthy period of area utilization; the possible
presence of cultural manifestations (Cody Ca~lex) hitherto unrecognized
for this area or environmental situation was also re~gnized. Despite
• these accunplishments, the exact purpose of the occupation utilization of
the area had yet to be determined and extensive mitigative procedures
were clearly necessary before the site was destroyed. The remainder of
this paper discusses the results of mitigation operations at site SRC139.
LJ
19
