•
Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc. performed a
cultural resource inventory of the Seneca II Coal Lease, Routt
County, Colorado (Wheeler 1980). This inventory resulted in
the discovery and recording of two archaeological sites which
required further investigation through test excavation in
order to evaluate site significance.
SRT139 was recorded as an open lithic scatter about one-quarter
section in extent, and is located primarily in the NE4 of Section
11, Township 5N, Range 87W.
Based on surface evidence, it was inferred that the site
• ~ was a habitation site with a strong possibility of containing
a buried component with a Cody Complex affiliation. If the
inference was supported, the significance of SRT139 would be
evident.
5RT142 was recorded as an open camp/lithic scatter located
in SEA of Section 12, Township SN, Range 87W. Though surface
artifacts were sparse, the majority of artifacts were apparently
eroding out of the arroyo. Based upon the .presence of a mano,
knife, biface, secondary flakes, utilized flakes and biface
reduction flakes, the possibility existed that 5RT142 was
a buried campsite of unknown cultural/temporal affiliation which
required test excavations to determine significance.
In order to further evaluate these sites, multimethod
• testing programs were employed. The results of the programs
and final site evaluations are presented in this report.
L
