•
ABSTRACT
Sites SRT139 and 5RT142 are archaeological sites recorded
•
•
during a cultural resource inventory of the Seneca II Coal
Lease, Routt County, Colorado. Surface indications on SRT139
suggested the possibility of a buried archaeological component
with Cody Complex affiliations. Since this would be a unique
occurrence, a testing program was initiated. Results of the
testing program include the discovery of additional Cody Com-
plex material, a McKean component, cultural stratigraphy, and
nine subsurface hearths or baking pits. Based on the testing
results, significance is unquestionable. Since avoidance is
impossible, mitigation is recommended. Surface indications on
5RT142 suggested a possible buried campsite eroding out of an
arroyo. Results of the testing program indicate that 5RT142
is the result of secondary deposition and no further work is
recommended.
iv
