SRT139.66
Form: The specimen is a tertiary flake, sub- •
rectangular in outline, and biplano in
cross-section. The proximal end exhibits
a pronounced hinge fracture. Cultural
modification is present only on the dorsal
face and most prominently on the distal end.
Both lateral edges were modified, but not as
extensively as the distal end.
Material: Red chert
Dimensions: 2.73 cm. long x 2.64 cm. wide x .47 cm. thick
Retouch: The flake was produced through percussion
flaking and exhibits a prominent channel flake
scar on the dorsal face. The perimeter is
steeply retouched.
Functional
Interpretation: The location of the unifacial retouch in
association with both minute scalar and step
fractures indicate a.scraping activity.
Positioning of both modification and wear
indicates a combination end and side scraping
tool.
•
SRT139.70
Form: The specimen is a biface fragment featuring
a medial snap. Lateral edges are slightly
excurvate as is the basal area; corners and
haft elements are absent. Cross-section is
lenticular. Still evident on both the dorsal
and ventral faces are the original flake
scars produced during manufacture.
Material: Clear chalcedony
Dimensions: 1.17 cm. long x 1.30 cm. wide x .22 cm..thick
Retouch: Irregular bifacial pressure flaking and peri-
pheral retouch are present, however, the
retouch is located only on the ventral face.
Functional
Interpretation: The lack of any noticable wear and the absence
of a haft element suggest incompletion in
the manufacture process. The artifact is
probably a preform.
•
42
