2010 Climax Mine Reclamation Report
Vail Class A biosolids were imported to the site and used for reclamation maintenance or new
reclamation in difficult to access areas. In total 100.5 acres were treated with biosolids in 2010.
In July 2010, the biosolids production pad was graded and repaired. Climax personnel worked
with Parker Ag and facilitated the import of gravel and rock to patch holes that emerged during
the winter. In August 2010, Climax hosted a field tour for biosolids producers, USFS contacts,
CO state regulators, and Parker Ag. The tour was very successful and helped to foster
communication between partners and interested parties to Climax's biosolids operation.
New Reclamation
New reclamation was completed on 123.2 acres in 2010. This included areas never previously
reclaimed, reclaimed areas that had been subsequently re-disturbed, and a few areas were
reclamation had not been successful the first time.
Seed Mixes
In 2010, several new reclamation seed mixes were submitted as a part of the Climax Mine permit
amendment (AM-06). A large quantity of the old Climax seed mix was ordered in 2005 and
several bags were still available in 2010; however, there was not an adequate supply for all 2010
reclamation. When the old seed mix ran out in the middle of the reclamation season, Climax
management ordered the new mix to complete the remaining 2010 reclamation. Thus, some
areas were seeded with the old mix (Table 2) and some with the new mix (Table 4) in 2010.
Additionally, Climax ordered some of the wetland seed mix (Table 3) outlined in the permit
amendment for use on the wet areas on Robinson TSF.
1 Dam
The majority of 1 Dam was limed and seeded after it was capped. However, no organic
amendments were applied and the reclamation has never been successful. In 2010, biosolids
were applied to the southern-most portion of the dam face, incorporated and the area was seeded
with the new seed mix (Areas 16 & 19 on Map 2). A total of 10.9 acres were reclaimed.
A small area on the northern-most portion of the dam was reclaimed in 2004 using available
topsoil. This reclamation has been very successful. In 2010, a contractor working in this area re-
disturbed 2.3 acres of the reclamation. This area (Area 6 on Map 1) was subsequently regarded
and reseeded with the new seed mix.
3 Dam
In 2009 and 2010 a seep on the face of 3 Dam was repaired. This seep had caused some erosion
through established reclamation at the base of the dam. After Climax personnel repaired the
erosion, biosolids were placed, incorporated and seeded with the new Climax seed mix. A 0.6
acre area was reclaimed (Area 1 on Map 1).
10 Mile TSF
In preparation for increasing the elevation of 10 Mile TSF, topsoil and vegetation was stripped
around the edges of the pond in 2008 and 2009. Several of these stripped areas were seeded and
hydromulched in 2009, the remaining areas (Areas 2 - 5 on Map 1) were completed in 2010. A
total of 1.6 acres were seeded with the old seed mix and hydromulched in 2010. The hydromulch
was applied with the addition of 1000 lbs/acre of Biosol to provide organic matter and nutrients
Habitat Management, Inc. 2 February 2011
