I sss
7/15/76
Rex Taliaferro
bon Bogart
RE: Headley Sand & Gravel
in company wit: John Pogorelz and ?_ar*y Aulide., I inspected the sand and gravel
mines on the Galen Headley property at Snyder, July 14, 1976.
The mines are located in the Sandhill area north of the Platte River just to
the northeast of Snyder. The mines have been operated for a number of years.
As a result several rather deep excavations have been created. Some of the
very deepest ones have water in them at the water table level. One of the
more shallow excavations which has silted in from flood waters is also holding
water.
From a wildlife standpoint, this oneration has changed the environment from a
• short grass prairie type of sand hill habitat to an aquatic-marshy type of
habitat. The large shallow pond has produced duck nesting habitat as well as
an area of waterfowl harvest in the fall of the year. Mr. Headley has also
planted several species of warm water fish in the deeper pits and I under-
stand they are doing very well.
The area has antelope range within a mile or two, but no antelope have been
observed using the area that is now being mined. This is probably due to the
fact that the farming and dwellings of farm families are in the immediate
vacinity of the mine.
other species of wildlife observed in the area were numerous shore birds and
song birds, one species of 'which is our state bird, the lark b•.ti::;.
are no known threatened or endangered species in the area.
DB/edy
•
