s
2010 Revegetation Survey
Introduction
Visual surveys of the referenced sites were made. Each site was walked or ridden with an
ATV to assess the site. Observations were then recorded on an inspection form for future
reference (see Appendix). The intent of the inspections was to:
1. Assess the effectiveness of past revegetation practices.
2. Identify potential problems that exist that may warrant further attention.
3. Provide insight to future revegetation efforts.
4. Provide information needed to develop strategies to correct potential
deficiencies.
During 2010 we saw a normal winter with higher than normal precipitation the remainder of
the year. Overall, 2010 had above average precipitation of 16.07 inches at the D -Portal Area
compared to the average annual precipitation of 10.02 inches.
Two intense rainfall events occurred during the summer. On July 8th we experienced a
highly localized event which produced 1.07 inches of precipitation, most of which occurred
during a 15 minute period. A second storm, also highly localized, on August 3rd produced
1.76 inches of precipitation within about a 2 -hour period. The 10 -year 24 -hour design event
for this site is 1.60 inches. Both of these events were very localized with the vast majority
of the precipitation falling on the D -Portal to Raw Water Lagoon areas. Rains were only
light to moderate intensity at and north of County Road 65.
The intense events did effect the East Portal Reclamation by washing down sediment from
undisturbed slopes above the site. The extent of the impact will not be known until next
year when the vegetation has a chance to reemerge.
Cheatgrass continues to be a regional problem providing strong competition for the more
desirable perennial species. In 2010 cheatgrass infestations were somewhat suppressed but
still prevalent.
