Hickenlooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Loretta Pineda
Director
RE: File No. M-1977-348; Boettcher Limestone Quarry; Review of 2010 Groundwater
Sampling Results and Request for Additional Groundwater Sampling.
Mr. Toelle:
The Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety (DRMS) has completed its review of the
groundwater monitoring analytical results report for the September 2010 sampling event
for the Boettcher Limestone Quarry site submitted January 6, 2011. Unfortunately, it
appears that some analytes have exceeded the benchmark values for this sampling event,
and others seem to show an upward trend. In particular, the level of barium in MW4 was
over 4 times the MCL value. Barium values were also slightly over the MCL in MW2
and MW3. There were also minor exceedences for boron in MW3, and TDS in MW4.
pH, selenium, and TDS values also appear to be generally climbing. Due to the length of
time since the last monitoring event, it is impossible at this time to know if this is a recent
development, or the result of a gradual increase.
As previously stated, if groundwater is shown to be impacted above applicable
benchmarks, additional monitoring, plume delineation, and perhaps remedial actions may
be required to release the site in accordance with 3.1.7 of the Construction Materials
Rule.
Before additional monitoring/compliance wells or piezometers are required to be
installed, it seems that a reasonable first step would be to confirm that the data obtained
from the September 2010 sampling event is, in fact, representative. Therefore, the
operator must conduct monthly groundwater sampling from the four existing on-site
groundwater wells to determine aquifer conditions during the 2011 calendar year.
Sampling events should adhere to the previously approved standards/protocol to insure
data compatibility. The reviewed data for each event should be added to data tables
similar to those provided in the analytical results report and provided to DRMS when it
becomes available. If it becomes apparent in less than the full year's monitoring that the
September 2010 data is either supported or an anomaly, DRMS may re-evaluate and
determine what the next logical step(s) should be.
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Denver • Grand Junction • Durango
Office of
Active and Inactive Mines
