• SM'
1.0 INTRODUCTION
As part of continued resource development in Colorado, the New Elk Mine near
Trinidad is proposed to be reopened. As part of the design development process for the
site, Huddleston -Berry Engineering and Testing, LLC (HBET) was retained by River
City Consultants, Inc. to conduct a geotechnical investigation at the site. In addition,
HBET was retained to conduct a geotechnical investigation for proposed Highway 12
improvements near a site referred to as the Jansen yard.
1.1 Scope
As discussed above, geotechnical investigations were conducted at the New Elk
Mine and Jansen Yard near Trinidad, Colorado. The scope of the investigations included
the following components:
• Conducting subsurface investigations to evaluate the subsurface conditions at
the sites.
• Collecting soil samples and conducting laboratory testing to determine the
engineering properties of the soils at the sites.
• Providing recommendations for foundation type and subgrade preparation for
several proposed structures.
• Providing recommendations for bearing capacity.
. ■ Providing recommendations for lateral earth pressure.
• Providing recommendations for drainage, grading, and general earthwork.
The investigations and report were completed by a Colorado registered
professional engineer in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering
practices. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of River City Consultants,
Inc. and the Owner.
1.2 Site Location and Description
The New Elk Mine site and Jansen Yard site are located along Highway 12 west
of Trinidad, Colorado. The project locations are shown on Figures 1 and 2.
At the time of the investigation, the New Elk Mine site was occupied by
numerous structures, spoils piles, etc. related to prior mining activities. The site was
located in a narrow stream valley and the stream flowed through the site toward the east.
The valley bottom sloped gently down to the east. The hills flanking the valley bottom
sloped fairly steeply up to the north and south, respectively. Highway 12 ran along the
northern property boundary.
0
W:1200S ALL PROJECTS':004S6 - Rim City Consultants l0e0456.0W Neff• EW200 - G dm456 -0M R082A10.doe
