Class IllInventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 223
L-1
approximately 10 ft square and 4 ft deep located 75 ft (25 m) north of Feature 1. Several large
sandstone rocks are present along the interior south edge of the feature. Feature 4 is a rock
foundation that measures 14 x 18 ft and is located 65 ft (20 m) northwest of Feature 1. Unshaped
sandstone rocks are located along only the south and east walls, suggesting that the structure may
have been open to the north and west.
The remains of both wagons are poorly preserved and incomplete. The first wagon consists of the
single -tree hitch and fragments of the box. The second wagon consists of only the single -tree hitch
and front axle. The sled, like the wagons, is in poor condition and consists only of the deteriorated
frame comprised of two 10 x 3 -ft sections. The hay rack is an A frame that is 18 ft in length and 9 ft
wide that may have been mounted or used as a sled. Two disconnected wagon axle shafts are nearby
and may be associated with the rack. The apparatus appears to have been homemade. The original
spring -fed water source located in the northern part of the site is now depleted. Several lengths of
lead pipe, lumber scraps, and a 16 -inch diameter galvanized water tank are associated with the
spring.
The trash concentration is located in the east - central part of the site 60 ft (18 m) north of Feature 1.
The debris is primarily comprised of glass, tin cans, and miscellaneous artifacts. The glass artifacts
are categorized as either canning jars or beverage vessels. The canning jars are all clear glass with
threaded finishes and, with one exception, are 1 -qt size containers. Of the 11 canning jars, eight
specimens (including the one 2 -qt size jar) have the Hazel -Atlas Glass Co. maker's mark used from
1920 to 1964 (Toulouse 1971). Two jars have a Knox Glass Bottle Co. of Knox, Pennsylvania,
maker's mark in use from 1924 to 1968. One jar is embossed with "Ball" that has been in use since
1900. The 30 beverage bottles all have crown finishes and are mainly clear glass vessels. The
21 clear glass bottles all have Owens - Illinois Glass Co. maker's marks denoting manufacture from
1930 to 1971. Nineteen were manufactured at the Streaton, Illinois, plant, and two were made at the
Alton, Illinois, manufacturing plant. The remaining beverage bottles consist of seven brown glass
specimens, one partial green glass specimen, and the round base of one purple- discolored (amethyst)
glass specimen.
C
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
