Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 91
•
6.1.19 Site 5MF6077 (NF -22)
Site Tyne Prehistoric lithic scatter
Legal Locatio Section 13, T4N, R94W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensio 77 x 66 m
Site Description Site 5MF6077 is a prehistoric lithic scatter located at 6,640 ft (2,024 m) on the
southeast - facing slope of a northeast - trending ridge (Figure 6.40). The site is on the west side of
Collom Gulch and southwest of the mouth of the gulch and the confluence of Collom and Little
Collom Gulches. Axial Basin is located to the north. The general area has numerous
northeast- trending ridges and gulches, as well as exposures of bedrock and coal seams (Figure 6.41).
On -site sediment consists of shallow intermixed aeolian silty sand and colluvium with gravel and
( eroding bedrock detritus. The vegetation community consists of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, cheatgrass,
various low grasses, and various forbs. Impacts to the site include extensive slopewash,
downcutting, and livestock grazing.
•
The lithic scatter consists of one projectile point, three bifaces, one flake tool, one multidirectional
core, 22 flakes, and one groundstone tool. The projectile point is a small corner - notched specimen
missing the distal portion and the stem (Figure 6.42). The extant portion measures 20P x 14 x 4 mm
and is made of fossiliferous chest. The blade is triangular in plan view and biconvex in cross section
and exhibits random flaking. The shoulders are sharp to somewhat downswept. One of the bifaces
is a complete blank made of fossiliferous chert that measures 4.1 x 2.4 x 1.6 cm. The absence of
usewear suggests that the blank is a manufacturing stage. The other two bifaces are indeterminate
bifaces. One is a medial /lateral portion that measures 2AP x 2.3P x 0.6 cm that is made of opaque
chert. It appears to have a large unrefined notch but is too incomplete for accurate analysis. The
second indeterminate biface is a distal tip from an early stage biface made of semitranslucent chert.
The artifact measures 2.51? x 2AP x 0.4 cm. The flake tool is a retouched and utilized complete
quartzite tertiary flake that measures 2.6 x 2.6 x 0.4 cm. The dorsal surface has been retouched to
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
■
