142 Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project
Site Description Site 5MF6092 is a small prehistoric lithic scatter located on the upper portion of
the north end of a northeast- trending ridge between Collom Gulch to the west and Jubb Creek
to the east (Figure 6.77). It is situated at 6,920 ft (2,109 m) near the head of an unnamed
northwest - trending drainage. Exposures of sandstone bedrock are common in the general area and
within the site proper (Figure 6.78). On -site sediment consists of residual. silty clay with gravel and
eroding bedrock detritus. The sparse vegetation community consists of scattered juniper, sagebrush,
and low bunchgrasses. Impacts to the site include erosion, and vehicle traffic along a two -track road
that passes through the north - central part of the site.
The lithic scatter consists of three bifaces, two flake tools, 35 flakes, and one mano. The bifaces
consist of one final biface fragment and one complete blank and one blank fragment. The final
biface fragment is amedial portion that measures 2.81? x 3.1 x 1.2 cm and is made of quartzite. Both
blanks are made of quartzite and reflect manufacturing stages. The complete specimen measures
13.2 x 3.7 x 1.2 cm and exhibits longitudinal thinning on the dorsal and ventral surfaces. The blank
fragment is a distal end that measures 5.7P x 2.5 x 1.1 cm. Both flake tools are complete utilized
retouched opaque chert flakes. The first flake tool measures 4.9 x 4.1 x 0.7 cm, and the second
specimen measures 3.7 x 3.9 x 0.6 cm. Usewear was noted on the distal and lateral margins of both
artifacts. The debitage assemblage consists of 35 tertiary flakes. Quartzite is the most common
material type with 30 flakes. The remaining five flakes are made of opaque chert. The mano is a
small complete sandstone cobble that measures 8.3 x 5.0 x 3.5 cm and exhibits light grinding on one
surface.
Of the artifacts described above, the final biface fragment, the blank, one flake tool, and 25 of
30 quartzite flakes are located in a 3 x 1 -m concentration within the northern end of the site. This
concentration may reflect a small activity area that is eroding downslope.
The site was not tested because the sediment context consists of residuum impacted by slopewash
and exposed bedrock.
•
47599
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
:F
