Class IIIInventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 111
6.1.25 Site 5MF6083 (A -31)
Site Type Prehistoric lithic scatter
Legal Locatio Section 20, T4N, R93W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensio 113 x 67 in
Site Descripjion Site 5MF6083 is a diffuse lithic scatter located on the east side of a broad ridge
west of Jubb Creek at 7,080 ft (2,158 m) (Figure 6.54). The confluence of the East and West Forks
of Jubb Creek is located approximately 0.5 mi (0.8 km) south of the site (Figure 6.55). On -site
sediment consists of residual sandy clay with a large volume of gravel and eroding bedrock detritus.
Exposures of bedrock are common in the general area and within the site proper. The vegetation
community is sparse and consists of scattered junipers, sagebrush, rabbitbrush, low grasses, prickly
pear cactus, and sparse forbs. Impacts to the site include erosion and livestock trampling.
The lithic scatter consists of three projectile point fragments, two biface manufacturing fragments,
one graver, and 39 flakes. The first projectile point consists of the medial portion of a
corner - notched. specimen (Figure 6.56). The artifact has one remaining ear and is missing the stem,
one ear, and the distal portion. The point measures 23P x 18P x 3 mm and is made of opaque chert.
The extant randomly flaked blade is triangular in plan view and biconvex in cross section. The
second specimen is a base fragment from a possible lanceolate point (Figure 6.57). The fragment
exhibits rounded ears and a wide shallow notch. The artifact measures 9P x 18P x 3 mm and is made
of white opaque chert. The third point fragment consists of an ear of a possible corner- notched
point. It measures 7P x l OP x 2 mm and is made of opaque chert.
Of the two biface fragments, the first is a preform medial/lateral portion made of opaque chert that
measures 3.5P x 1.8P x 0.4 cm. It exhibits fine pressure flaking in an irregular pattern. The second
biface fragment is an indeterminate portion of a blank that measures 3.3P x 1.9P x 0.4 cm and is
made of opaque chert. No usewear was noted on either of the biface fragments.
