Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 87
•
Landowner Private
Site Dimensions 440 x 200 m
Site Descripti Site 5MF6076 is a prehistoric open camp located on a ridge spur at the north end
of a northeast - trending ridgeline (Figure 6.37). The site lies at 6,680 ft (2,036 m) and overlooks the
mouth of Morgan Gulch to the west and Axial Basin to the north. On -site sediment consists of
shallow sheet deposits overlying and intermixed with eroding sandstone gravel and bedrock detritus.
Exposures of bedrock occur throughout the ridge spur in general and within the site proper
(Figure 6.3 8). 'The vegetation community consists of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, cheatgrass, low grasses,
and various forbs. Impacts to the site include vehicular traffic along a two -track road that passes
through the site along the crest of the ridge spur, erosion, and livestock trampling.
The open carne consists of one eroded hearth (Feature 1) and a scatter of flaked stone artifacts.
Feature 1 consists of the very poorly preserved remains of a hearth located in the two - track road at
the north end of the site. The feature consists of charcoal - stained sediment that measures 63 x
43 em. An unspecified number of heat - altered rock fragments were noted in and around the staining.
The feature has been heavily impacted by vehicle traffic and cattle grazing.
The flaked stone artifact assemblage consists of one projectile point, two bifaces, two flake tools,
and 207 flakes. The projectile point is a nearly complete stemmed specimen that compares favorably
with McKean stemmed types (Figure 6.39). It measures 34 x 21 x 5 mm and is missing one corner
of the hafting element. The randomly flaked blade is triangular in plan view with slightly expanding
margins and is biconvex in cross section. The straight stem is 11 mm in length and 14 mm wide.
The extant portion of the base appears flat. The specimen is made of mottled opaque chert. The two
bifaces appear to be manufacturing stages. One is made of gray opaque chert. It is finely flaked and
measures 1.9 x 1.3 x 0.3 cm. The second biface is a preblank made of white opaque chert that
measures 3.2 x 1.7 x 0.6 cm.
•
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
