Class W Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 101
0 6.1.22 Site 5MF6080 (NF -23)
Site Type Prehistoric lithic scatter /historic artifacts
Legal Locatio Section 13, T4N, R94W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensio 150 x 25 in
Site Descripti Site 5MF6080 is a diffuse multicomponent site located on the north end of the
ridge spine between Morgan and Collom Gulches (Figure 6.47). The site is at 6,840 ft (2,085 m) and
overlooks the mouth of Morgan Gulch to the northwest and Axial Basin to the north. The general
area consists of broad northeast - trending ridges and gulches (Figure 6.48). Bedrock outcrops are
common throughout the area in general and within the site proper. On -site sediment is residual with
tabular sandstone cobbles and a shallow discontinuous veneer of aeolian silty sand overlying
ip bedrock. The vegetation community consists of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, low grasses, and various
forbs. Impacts to the site include erosion and livestock trampling.
The site consists of a diffuse prehistoric lithic scatter and two historic artifacts. The lithic scatter
consists of one flake tool and four flakes. The flake tool is a retouched flake made of opaque chert
that measures 3.9 x 2.7 x 1.5 em. It is made on a complete tertiary flake and has a steep retouched
distal margin and limited dorsal retouch for thinning. Possible usewear was noted along the distal
margin. The debitage assemblage consists of four tertiary flakes. Of these flakes, three are made
of white opaque chert and one is made of semitranslucent chert.
The sparse historic component consists of one clear glass bottle and one crushed hinged -lid tobacco
can. The bottle has a round base and continuous thread finish. It measures 6 11/16 x 3 x
3 3/8 inches and has "Federal. Law Forbids Sale or Reuse of the Bottle" embossed on the body. The
presence of the embossing and the bottle top design date the bottle to post -1924. The tobacco can
was too crushed for measurement, but the hinged -lid design dates to between 1907 and 1948.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
M
