i0i
DRAFT
2 SAMPLING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
5
2.1 Rationale for sampling
The proposed sampling program is summarized in Table 2.1 and discussed in greater
detail in Work Plan. It includes installation of piezometers, wells, water level monitoring,
groundwater sampling and analysis, measurement of surface water flow and surface
water sampling and analysis. Limited geochemical sampling and analysis is also
proposed.
Table 2.1 Planned work and rationale
•
Sampling
Planned Activities
Rationale
installation
Bedrock
Install standpipe
• Piezometers targeted in I -Sand and /or coal seams, H-
Piezometers
piezometers
Sand and /or coal seams, Fab /G coal seams and the
• Conduct slug tests
sandstone unit above the Fab seam
• Monitor water levels
• [-Sand and H -Sand comprise potential first sources of
groundwater below proposed floor of pit
• Fab /G seams comprise the most likely source of
groundwater inflow to the pit
• Sandstone above Fab comprises another potential
source of inflow to the pit. The Utah International
information equates this unit with the Twentymile
Sandstone.
• Piezometers will be used to determine the level of
saturation in these units across the site and the pre -
mining piezometric head distribution.
• Slug tests will provide some indication of hydraulic
p roperties.
Bedrock
• Install monitor wells
• Monitor wells are targeted in the H- Sand /coal seams,
monitoring wells
• Develop wells
Fab /G coal seams and the sandstone above the Fab.
• Conduct single -hole
• Wells will be tested to determine hydraulic properties of
pumping tests
units.
• Monitor water levels
• Water samples will be obtained to determine baseline
• Obtain water quality
groundwater quality in each major unit that may
samples
contribute to mine inflow.
• Water levels will supplement information from
p iezometers
Bedrock test
• Install test production
• The test production well will determine large -scale
production wells
well
hydraulic parameters that will influence mine inflow,
• Install vibrating wire
dewatering and slope depressurization
transducers
• Transducers installed in holes surrounding the pumping
• Conduct long -term
well will monitor the response Jo pumping in various key
p umping test
units
Alluvial
• Install monitor wells
• Monitor wells are targeted in alluvium along major stream
monitoring wells
.
