Work plan DRAFT 11 <br />r <br />The frequency of measurement of field parameters and collection of water quality <br />samples from intermittent and ephemeral streams will be determined on an individual <br />basis. For ephemeral streams, water quality samples and field parameters will be <br />collected at least twice during the year; once during snowmelt and once during a storm <br />event. For intermittent streams, field parameters will be measured at least twice during <br />the year and not more than once each month. Likewise, water quality samples from <br />intermittent streams will be collected at least twice each year but not more than <br />quarterly. <br />3.3 Geochemistry <br />The geochemical baseline program will be carried out in three phases. Phase I will be <br />the pre - feasibility sampling and geochemical testing of one hole in the box cut area. <br />Additional geochemical baseline testing will need to be conducted for permitting <br />purposes but will be done as Phases 2 and 3 under a separate work scope (if the <br />project is continued to feasibility and permitting). <br />The geochemical testing program will be designed to satisfy regulations set forth in <br />CMLRB (1980), and CMLRD (1982). Relevant information for characterizing the <br />geochemistry of soil and rock materials will be obtained including: <br />• existing geochemical test data; <br />C surface and groundwater chemistry; and <br />• geologic data on surface soils, overburden, inter burden, coal seams, and <br />the underlying strata. <br />Under State guidelines, coal and overburden sampling should be conducted on a <br />frequency of one sampling drill hole per square mile, with a minimum of four drill holes. <br />Each individual stratum should be sampled. For thinly bedded strata, of beds less than <br />4 -ft thick, samples may be composited into 4 -ft intervals. All carbonaceous strata <br />greater than 1 -ft thick should be sampled. <br />Geochemical testing will include the specific tests required by CMLRD (1982) and may <br />include additional testing as appropriate. At a minimum this will include testing to <br />determine if the coal and overburden samples are "non -toxic or non -acid forming." In <br />addition CMLRB (1980) defines analyses to include, but not limited to, sulfur, pyrite, and <br />marcasite content, in addition to "acid- forming, toxic - forming or alkalinity - producing <br />materials." <br />Table 3.5 shows the analyses required by CMLRD (1982) and would be augmented by <br />analysis of pyrite, marcasite, and carbonate mineralogic content. Analyses would be <br />conducted on an appropriate number of samples to statistically represent, and in <br />proportion to, the volume of material planned to be excavated or exposed during mining. <br />The number of samples will also be controlled by the complexity and variability of the <br />geology and soil profiles present. Chemical and mineralogic data would be <br />complimented by leach or column testing, and soil fertility tests, as necessary. <br />2572 -R1 Colowyo Coal Company, L.P <br />Water Management Consultants <br />
