4.0 SUMMARY •
In July 2009, an Order 2 soil survey was completed at the RD&D Lease COC-69166 site to
provide the basis for formulating a practical and successful reclamation plan addressing soil
suitability, salvage depth recommendations, and available topsoil volume. For over 40 years,
at least 50 acres of the study area has been utilized as study plots for range revegetation
research; however, the overall impact to the soils appears to be minimal.
Six major map units (33, 64, 70, 73, 75, and 104) containing five soil series (Forelle,
Piceance, Redcreek, Rentsac, and Yamac) were identified and sampled in the study area.
Analyses and interpretation reveals these soils are entirely suitable for reclamation purposes
to depths of 16 inches or more. Two additional minor map units (DL, Disturbed Land and
RL, Reclaimed Land) were identified in the study area. The Disturbed Land map unit,
consisting of mostly of small stockpiles of topsoil and/or subsoils, can be utilized for
reclamation purposes. The volume of soil contained in these stockpiles was not determined
as part of this investigation. The Reclaimed Land map unit consists of a buried pipeline
corridor and is not suitable for use in reclamation.
Approximately 145 acres are available for disturbance containing approximately 8 inches of
topsoil and approximately 8 inches of subsoil. If the entire 145 acres are proposed for
disturbance there would be an approximate total of 155,000 cubic yards of suitable topsoil,
and 155,000 cubic yards of suitable subsoil available for use in reclamation.
i
•
13
