Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 44
will be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours. Once dry, both fractions will be collected in clean
plastic ziplock bags to await sorting and analysis.
The light fraction will be air -dried and examined under a binocular dissecting microscope at 10x
and 20x magnification. All seeds will be removed and placed in vials. The charred plant
macrofossils will then be identified using seed manuals and a seed reference collection at
TRC Mariah. To avoid faulty interpretations due to contamination from the modern seed rain,
uncharred plant seeds will not be considered prehistoric. Seeds are produced in enormous
quantities, and unburned seeds are naturally deposited by such means as root holes, drying
cracks, downwashing, and burrowing organisms. Under normal environmental conditions,
uncharred seeds related to cultural activities generally decompose and disappear from the site
record in less than a century after deposition. Wood charcoal from the samples will also be
identified to taxon where possible.
5.3.7 Human Remains
If any evidence of human remains is encountered, excavation at that particular site will cease
immediately. The remains will be protected from further disturbance. The BLM Little Snake
Field Office and Colowyo will be contacted immediately for further instruction.
5.3.8 Reportin
A report detailing the results of the excavations will be completed and submitted to the BLM
within 18 months of the completion of the fieldwork. The results of the excavations will be
presented in a single report, which will facilitate comparison. The report will include
descriptions of the scope of fieldwork; detailed analysis of the environment, depositional, and
culture historic context of the investigated sites; detailed presentation of basic feature and
artifactual data and analyses; and analysis and discussion of the results in terms of the research
design provided. above. Artifacts recovered from BLM:- administered lands will be curated at the
Museum of Western Colorado. Artifacts from private land will be sent to the landowner.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
