376 Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project
Landowner Private
Site Dimension 60 x 25 m
Site Descriptio Site 5MF4010 occurs adjacent to but outside ofthe extreme northeastern portion
of the project area and was originally recorded by MAC in August 1995 as part of the Colowyo Coal
Company 1995 lease and exploration Class III inventory. The site was defined as a prehistoric lithic
scatter eroding out of the terrace and cutbank on the west side of Wilson Creek at 6,560 ft (1,999 m)
(Figure 6.228). Soils were characterized as deep alluvial deposits of yellow -brown sandy loam with
numerous gravel lenses, and the surrounding vegetation consisted of sagebrush, thistles, grasses, and
tamarisk. Five to 10 flakes were observed in situ at 360 cm below surface in two deeply dissected
portions of the cutbank that had separated but not slumped from the terrace. Below the cutbank,
25+ flakes of white chest were found on redeposited sediment below these separated parts of the
cutbank. They lie at the base of the cutbank, which suggests that the site is eroding out from the
cutbank above.
The deep alluvial deposits from which the flakes are eroding out of were not tested during the initial
recording. MAC recommended that the site needed more data to determine its eligibility status, and
the Colorado DAHP officially concurred with that assessment.
•
TRC Mariah revisited the site in August of 2005 as part of the Collom Mine Expansion project.
During the revisit, the in situ flake locality was relocated along with the slumped sediment
containing the additional flakes. Five additional localities of eroding white chest flakes were
discovered along the cutbank. All of the localities are at approximately the same depth below
surface (approximately 360 cm) as the originally recorded artifacts, and they occur in a horizontal
area approximately 20 in in length. Charcoal flecks also were observed in two of the flake localities
along the cutbank, and a possible biface was noted in higher strata.
The site was not tested during the current inventory and evaluation due to the massive depth of the
alluvial deposits along the cutbank. Flakes and charcoal flecking were noted in five locations that
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
