344 Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project
i
Because the site occurs outside of the mine permit boundary and is recommended as not eligible for
the NRHP, there will be no effect from the proposed project. Cultural resource clearance is
recommended, with no ftu work.
6.2.23 Site 5MF1936
Site Tyne Open camp
Legal Location Section 21, T4N, R93W
Landowner Private
Site Dimensions 460 x 200 m
Site Descripti Site 5MF1936 is located adjacent to but just outside the northeast portion of the
Colowyo Collom Mine project boundary. The site was originally recorded during the Danforth Hills
C Coal Lease Area in 1984 by Nickens and Associates. It was then re- evaluated for the Colowyo Coal
Company lease and exploration areas project by MAC in 1995. The original recording described the
site as a lithic scatter and possible open camp situated at 6,580 to 6,600 ft (2,006 to 2,012 m) on the
eastern edge of a north - trending finger ridge that overlooks Wilson Creek to the north and east
(Figure 6.211). No soil description was provided, and the vegetation was described as sagebrush,
rabbitbrush, prickly pear cactus, and Indian ricegrass, with Gambel oak, pinyon pine, and juniper in
the vicinity around the site. One hearth was noted at the north end of the site, and artifacts consisted
of chest and quartzite utilized flakes, tools and flakes. Chert cobbles were observed eroding out of
a small wash at the south end of the site.
The site was revisited in 1995 and the southern portion of the site was extended to the west. The
feature recorded during the original survey in the northern portion of the site was relocated and was
considered to be a surface manifestation. It measured 50 x 50 cm and consisted of gray- stained
residuum and small burned sandstone slab fragments, but no artifacts or charcoal flecking was noted.
Flakes consisted of about 150 small white tertiary flakes, with other colors of chert and quartzite
flakes as well. Sediments at the site were characterized as shallow and residual with slopewashed
TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
