Lone Star fusion seamed (welded) geomembrane on the same day that it
was deployed. Lone Star used extrusion welds for seaming where the Phase 5 PSSA
100-mil LLDPE geomembrane was tied into existing Phase IVa and Phase IVb
geomembrane in the PSSA, for repairs, and where conditions were unfavorable for fusion
welding (e.g., sharp corners). AMEC observed trial seam tests, monitored seaming
equipment temperatures and speed, and provided visual observation of the seaming
procedures. AMEC observed the entire lengths of all seams, patches, and other repairs
either during seaming, or shortly after completion.
6.2.3.1 Trial Seam Monitoring
Lone Star performed trial seams to monitor the performance of the seaming apparatus and
operator under actual site conditions. Each welding operator and his apparatus produced
trial seams prior to the beginning of each day's seaming operation, after all work activity
stoppages, and in the event that devices were disconnected from power and re-energized.
Lone Star cut 1-inch wide samples (coupons) from each trial seam and tested the coupons
with a field tensiometer. Lone Star tested each double wedge fusion trial seam twice for
peel adhesion (peel) and once for bonded seam strength (shear). Lone Star conducted peel
tests on fusion welds on both the inner and outer tracks of each peel coupon. Lone Star
tested each extrusion trial seam twice for peel and once for shear.
AMEC personnel observed the testing of trial seam samples and documented test results.
AMEC observed the tensile testing of each trial seam coupon to verify that project yield
to strengths were met during shear testing and that failure did not occur in the weld during peel
AMEC Earth & Environmental, Inc.
2000 S.
