Site number SMF949:
C/S-1/2/SE/NE/SW of Sec. 8-TSN-R90W. (UTM: 13,285000 mE, 4476780 mN). A rock shelter with
associated red ocher figurine and abraded areas was recorded. Archeological Services recommended
that this site be tested to determine National Register eligibility, and that if construction activity comes
within 50 feet of the site, the site should be fenced. Further investigation of this site indicates it is the
same sRe surveyed by Bretemitz in 1972 and recorded as 5MF290 (refer to part IX of Appendix K).
2.9.2 Guttural and Historical Resources
In 1977, C. Arthur and C. Jennings recorded one historical sHe (5MF348) within the Trapper Mine pro-
posed permit area during a Class II archaeological reconnaissance. This slte is located in the NW1/4,
NW1/4 of Section 5, TSN, R91W. Their recommendation for this site was to awalt detailed archival
research on the site and an evaluation of the architectural remains by a trained Coloredo historian prior
to making a determination of the historical significance. In 1960, Rick Atheam, Colorado State Office
Historian for the Bureau of Land Management, evaluated this historic site (see recommendation in
Append'a K). Based on the site fortes prepared by C. Arthur, Mr. Atheam conducted that this site did not
• qualify for inGusion on the National Register of Hist` ric Places.
A second identified historic site was located by Archeological Services during the 1980 Class III cultural
resourrz survey of Trapper Mine. This site (SMF950) is located in the NWMWMEMW of Section 10,
TSN, R90W and was described as "historic structures with a scattering of recent debris". It is in a small
meadow with a spring. The area is presently being used as a sheep watering hole and bedding ground."
The recommendation by Archeological Services, is that if the slte will be impacted, local informants and
local history should be consulted to see if the site is of local significance. In May, 1987, stte SMF950 was
surveyed by Nickens and Associates at Trapper Mine's request. Results of the survey are shown in
Appendix K, Part XII. Based on the survey results, the State Historic Preservation Officer ruled that stte
wes not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (App. K, Part XII).
2-591 ----rnK_IS~{ -------
:i~F=v'
