?J
3.6.3.3 Fertilization
With approval of TR-89 in 2001, fertilization of Trapper reclaimed rangelands was discontinued. This
action was taken because it was felt that application of fertilizer on reclaimed rangelands was creating a
net decrease in overall plant community diversity. Fertilizer was benefiting the growth and establishment
of more aggressive grass and forb species at the expense of less prolific shrub and forb plant species.
3.6.3.4 Tillage
Rangeland tillage practices differ from those of cropland. Areas exhibiting severe surface topsoil
looseness are dragged or harrowed to compact the soil for seeding, however, the remaining retopsoiled
areas remain as is. Additionally, leaving the areas in a roughened, more heterogenous condition will
increase micro-habitat diversity. The semi-rough surface condition is also conducive to erosion control
and moisture retention.
• Planting Equipment
An Interagency Rangeland Drill or other similarly effective piece of equipment is used for seeding.
