GEC Strip Mine
Complete Oversight Inspection
August 10, 20'10
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS) Permit # C-1981-037
Participants:
Janet Binns, DRMS
Dan Hernandez, DRMS
Rob Zuber, DRMS
Elizabeth Shaeffer, OSM
Conditions: Cloudy, 80 degrees - ground conditions dry.
The participants evaluated the GEC Strip Mine bond forfeiture site for vegetation
success (cover and production o rec aimed al nos TFie areas samp>edweie Chen's
Hill,.West Pit, and Orphan Pit.
Sampling Method used (DRMS' 1995 Guidelines):
DRMS used a computer program (Hawths Tools in ArcMap) to randomly select 50
meter transects and compass directions. Once a computer-generated point was
located on the ground using a Trimble XT unit, the group used the next compass
direction (in degrees) from the computer-generated list. If the compass direction went
off-permit or into an inaccessible area, the next listed compass direction was used.
After the start point was identified, the group would head in the compass direction for 50
meters.
Every 10 meters along this transect, a laser was positioned that shot 10 lasers towards
the ground surface (for a total count of 50 data points along each transect). The team
collected the species data when a laser intersected vegetation, or would record if the
laser hit litter, rock, or bare ground. To calculate the percent cover, the results of the 50
data points were multiplied by two to obtain 100%.
At the 13 meter point along the transect and other randomly selected points, the group
marked a quadrant (1/4 square meter) by tossing a hoop to the right side of the 50-
meter measuring tape and then clipped and collected all vegetation that occurred in that
area to determine productivity and species diversity. Shrubs and other woody
vegetation were not clipped. The clippings were bagged, labeled, and will be dried in an
oven at 110 degrees for 48 hours before being weighed.
The Team collected a total of 19 cover transects (950 laser strikes) and 30 production
quadrants. The Team did not encounter any noxious species within the production
quadrants.
For photos, please see GEC Inspection report by DRMS in OSM files.
