<br />were then input and the model run to calculate and map the response of the ground <br />water system as a result of the introduction of the new reservoir. <br />GEOLOGY <br />The reservoir complex is located on the Colorado Piedmont section of the <br />Great Plains Physiographic Province. Specifically, the site is located on the western <br />flank of the Denver Basin, which is an asymmetrical structural basin filled with a thick <br />succession of sedimentary rocks ranging in age from upper Cretaceous to upper <br />Holocene. Geologic mapping of the area (Geologic Map of Fort Collins, Boulder, <br />Greeley Area, Colton, R.B., 1978) indicates the oldest formation mapped in the area is <br />the upper Cretaceous Fox Hills Sandstone. In this area, the Fox Hills Sandstone is <br />described as fine-grained silty sandstone with fissile shale that grades upward into <br />cross-bedded tan colored sandstone. The overlying upper Cretaceous Laramie <br />Formation consists of yellowish gray sandstone and sandy shale interbedded with <br />clay, shale, and coal which grades upward into gray claystone, shale, sandy shale, <br />and lenticular beds of sandstone and lignite. <br />Overburden deposits mapped at the site include the Slocum Alluvium, <br />Broadway Alluvium, and Piney Creek Alluvium that range in age from Pleistocene to <br />Upper Holocene. These alluvial deposits generally consist of cobbles, boulders, sand, <br />and gravel. Mapping indicates the alluvial deposits at the site are partially overlain by <br />upper Holocene eolian (wind-blown) deposits. <br />SURFACE WATER FEATURES <br />Boulder Creek is located approximately one-half to three-fourths of a mile <br />north of the site and South Platte Supply Canal and Lower Boulder Ditch pass through <br />the northern portion of the Goose Haven Reservoir complex as shown on Figure 1. <br />Earth embankments surround most of the two existing reservoirs on the site with <br />crest heights of up to about 15 feet above the adjacent ground surface. The <br />approximately rectangular Goose Haven Reservoirs No. 1 and No. 3 store a total of <br />about 1,630 acre-feet of water.
