In August, 1984. an old homestead site was located by Trapper Mine personnel in
Section 1, T5N, R91W. As this site fell within the permit boundary, Mariah Asso-
ciates was contracted to evaluate the find. A general site description and man-
agement recommendation follows: (See Part X of Appendix K for a detailed
description.)
Site number 5MF1960
NW 1/4, NE 1/4, NE 1/4,. SW 1/4, Section 1, T5N, R91W. The site appears to be
associated with homestead activities occurring no earlier than the 1920's. Fea-
tures of the site include possible remains of a foundation consisting of sand-
stone slabs, a pit which represents the beginnings of a well, a pile of sandstone
blocks and slabs, and a partially destroyed outhouse. Artifacts collected
include scraps of sheet metal, a five gallon can, and a wood-burning cook stove.
The site offers little potential for historical research, interpretation or pre-
servation. The site does not appear to meet criteria for the National Register
and no further work is recommended for this site. The Office of Surface Mining
and State Historical Preservation Officer concur with these recommendations (Part
X of Appendix K).
Trapper Mine personnel found another possible historical site in the fall of
1985. The site 5MF2253, is located in Section 35, T6N, R91W, within the permit
boundary. As a result, Nickens and Associates were contracted to evaluate this
find. Their detailed report and other correspondence concerning 5MF2253 are con-
tained in Appendix K, Part XI. A general site description and management recom-
mentation follows:
Site 5MF2253
SW 1/4, NW 1/4, SE 1/4, NW 1/4, Section 35, T6N, R91W. The site is a natural
rock overhang in which a stone wall has been built to apparently provide protec-
tion from winds. No artifacts or other cultural features were located. Appar-
ently the site may have be`n used by a sheepherder while tending his flock.
The site does not appear to have potential to contribute to the local history of
the area and does not meet the criteria for the National Register. No further
work on this site is recommended. Correspondence from the State Historical Pre-
servation Officer (Part XI of Appendix K) concurs with this management
recommendation.
2-591b REVISION Revised 8/86
APPRO ?D
DATE???r
