In the spring of 1981, Trapper Mine personnel noted what was apparently an unsur-
veyed historical site in Section 3, T5N, R91W within the proposed mine permit area.
Archeological Services was requested by Trapper Mine to survey the site (refer to
part IX of Appendix K). The site description and recommendations follow:
Site number 5MF1399
NW/SW/NE/.SE of Sec. 3 - T5N-R91W. (UTM:13;285900mE;4480150nN). The site appears
to be an old sheepherder's camp-squatter settlement. It contains three sandstone
slab foundations. Structure #1 is constructed of dry-laid yellow sandstone slabs
(3-4" thick, 12-16" across). The foundation is 8'NS x 18' EW with walls about 2'
thick. The height of the walls is indeterminable, but they were probably 2-2 1/2'
high and covered with a wooden superstructure. No artifacts were found in asso-
ciation with this foundation.
A second smaller foundation is located adjacent to Structure #1. This foundation
is made of sandstone slabs and is mostly covered by a road. The form of the founda-
tion is indeterminable. Presumably it is another small room. No artifacts were
found in association with this feature.
The third structure is located at the northern end of a stock pond, about 200'
south of the other structures. This foundation is also made of sandstone slabs.
The slabs are about 12-30" long and 3-6" thick. The inside dimensions on this
foundation are about 10' NS x 11' EW. Much silting and erosion has taken place
here, and the structural integrity is essentially gone. Artifacts near this struc-
ture include three pieces of iron which appear to be from an old iron stove (none .
diagnostic), sawn boards 0" x 4"), and one medial fragment from an iron "can (no
top; no seam).
The integrity of the site is poor. There do not appear to be any buried cultural
deposits, and the site does not appear to have the potential to contribute 'to the-
regional or local history of the area. The site does not appear to meet criteria
for the National Register. The data have been recorded, and no., further work is.
recommended.
W
2-591a
f
