Proposed Limestone Quarry Access Road and Overview Cultural Resources Inventory
4.0 File Search and Literature Review
A file search of the records at the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) at the
Colorado Historical Society was conducted by Greystone Environmental Consultants on behalf
of FSPT in June of 2001. URS was provided a summary of this file search and also reviewed
the records at OAHP on July 2, 2001. The file search and records review were conducted to
identify previous: surveys, recorded cultural resources, and properties that are listed on or
' eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) within the proposed project
area. The file search revealed that one survey had been conducted in the general project
vicinity, by which one cultural resource was documented in the project vicinity. Two other sites
are located within the project vicinity that were recorded without any relation to a specific survey
project. The file search also showed that no surveys had been conducted within the proposed
project area and that no previously recorded historic or archaeological sites are located in the
proposed project area.
The one previous survey was to the east of the proposed project area along the section line
between Sections 8 and 9, T22S, R64W. This was for a transmission line and the site recorded
' by this project in the vicinity is a segment of a historic agricultural drainage ditch (5PE1915.1).
This ditch crosses the proposed quarry area and is crossed by the proposed access road. The
two other sites were recorded in the 1950s and are located to the west of the proposed project
' area, but within the larger proposed lease area, in Section 12, T22S, R65W.
The initial records review also revealed that the proposed project area is crossed by a section of
the former Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (5PE1776) and the former Colorado and Southern
Railroad (5PE4162.1) joint line that is operated between Pueblo and Walsenburg. This section
of the railroads will be crossed by the proposed access road.
¦? 5.0 Methods
An intensive pedestrian cultural resources inventory was completed for the project area on June
25, 2001. Approximately 42 acres were subjected to intensive pedestrian survey by walking a
pair of zig-zag transects for 30-meters on each side of the proposed centerline, which was
staked at the time of the survey. If a site was discovered, the area was thoroughly searched
and pin flags were used to mark the location of individual artifacts. After the boundaries were
established, the sites were documented by means of field notes and a sketch map. The sites
' were mapped using paced distances to artifacts along measured compass bearings.
Representative photographs of the sites and any associated features were taken. No artifacts
were collected during the survey. Field notes and photograph negatives are on file at the
Denver office of URS.
Archival research was conducted between June 26 and July 5, 2001, at the Denver Public
Library Western History Collection, Colorado Historical Society Stephen Hart Library, State of
Colorado Department of Water Resources, Colorado State Archives, Bureau of Land
Management on-line General Land Office records, Pueblo County Historical Society, and
Pueblo Public Library.

*m 5
