161 <br />1 MR. MOUNTFORT: My name is Tom <br />2 Mountfort with Denver Water, environmental <br />3 compliance supervisor, been with Denver Water about <br />4 15 years. We really appreciate the division for <br />5 letting us.make a few comments. <br />6 The Schwartzwalder Mine is literally <br />7 at the intake of several water utilities, not just <br />8 Denver and Arvada. North Table Mountain is another <br />9 one. That provides water to over a quarter of the <br />10 population of Colorado. Therefore, methods of <br />11 remediation treatment and monitoring which have been <br />12 used elsewhere in the state may not be appropriate <br />13 for this -- in this case because of the proximity to <br />14 the reservior. It's 1.6 miles away. <br />15 The unusual situation may require <br />16 special financial surety from Cotter Corporation to <br />17 ensure that the costs incurred by water utilities as <br />18 a result of contamination are not borne by our <br />19 customers. The full cost of cleanup must be paid <br />20 for by.the institute that caused it. <br />21 (At this time Mr. Peterson entered <br />22 the hearing room.) <br />23 We are not comfortable with the <br />24 assumption that active treatment will only be <br />25 necessary for two years.
