Romig
Environmental Coordinator
June 29, 1995
Mr. Dan Beley
Environmental Protection Specialist
CDPHE - Water Quality Control Division
4300 Cherry Creek Dr. S.
Denver, CO 80222-1530
RE: WQCD request for information on stormwater management
Dear Mr. Beley:
This letter is in response to your June 1, 1995 letter requesting supplemental information on
stormwater management at the Climax Mine. I have attached the requested information following
our discussion this morning concerning item numbers 9 and 10.
Per our discussion in February and following discussions you have had with Mr. Jay Jones of the
Henderson Mine in June, the Climax Mine remains of the opinion that the letter submitted to your
office on September 29, 1993 is correct. To the best of our knowledge, all stormwater flows are
directed to Climax Mine water treatment system and discharged under the existing CPDES Permit
No. CO-0000248.
New management of the environmental program at the Climax Mine is in the process of conducting
a third party review of the facility to confirm Mr. Zancanella's 1993 letter. The exceptional
snowpack and lengthy spring has delayed site analysis until just this month.-This year does,
however, offer the potential to review stormwater on site under rare circumstances.
Should the site stormwater review indicate that it is necessary to develop stormwater controls or
best management practices for specific areas around the Climax Mine, Climax will proceed to
develop a Stormwater Management Plan for the facility. Furthermore, should the review identify
discharges not currently covered by the Climax CPDES permit, timely application for a Stormwater
Discharge Permit will be made to you office in September of 1995. Initial site review should be
complete in August.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (719) 486-2150, ext. 723.
Sincerely,
ryce R.
