5.3.1.6 Coherex Storage and Distribution Facility
Description: Coherex is an emulsion of water and petroleum hydrocarbons used in dust control
on the tailing pond surfaces.
Location: 18,000-gallon storage tank on the west side of Ten Mile tailing pond.
Spill Potential: Low.
Potential Volume Spilled: 18,000 gallons if entire tank ruptured.
Prevention and Control: Should the Coherex tank rupture, liquid materials would be contained
within a lined earthen berm capable of holding 21,000 gallons. If the delivery line from the
Coherex 18,000-gallon tank should rupture, Coherex would spill on the tailing pond where it is
applied for dust control purposes.
Countermeasures: Spilled Coherex trapped within the containment berm can be pumped back
into the storage tank using a small portable pump. This spilled material could simply be allowed
to evaporate or"crust over," as it is not a threat to waters of the State of Colorado.
Nearest Clean-up Equipment: A small gas powered portable pump is located adjacent to the
tank.
Monitoring: During dust control operations in the summer months, the Coherex tank is checked
at least once per day. Otherwise, when not in use it is checked weekly.
Reporting: Major spills of Coherex (greater than 500 gallons) should be reported immediately
to the Environmental Coordinator by using the "Spill Incident Report" form given in Appendix
1.
44
