5.3.1.4 Mayflower Waste Water Treatment Plant(MFWWTP) <br /> The MFWWTP is used as a control, monitoring, and reagent storage facility for final treatment <br /> of water prior to discharge into Ten Mile Creek <br /> Chemical: Sulfuric acid (H2SO4). <br /> Description: Sulfuric acid is a corrosive chemical which is used to adjust the pH of treated <br /> water to pH 7 prior to discharge to Ten Mile Creek. Sulfuric acid weighs 15.3 lbs/gallon. <br /> Location: Sulfuric acid is stored at the Mayflower Waste Water Treatment Plant(MFWWTP) in <br /> a 10,000-gallon tank. <br /> Spill Potential: Moderate. <br /> Potential Volume Spilled: Up to one truckload (approximately 3000 gallons). <br /> Prevention and Control: Operator care when unloading the transport truck is the most <br /> important factor in prevention of a spill. Climax' policy of requiring a company employee to be <br /> present when unloading is also of key importance. A concrete containment structure capable of <br /> storing 11,500 gallons of acid surrounds the 10,000-gallon tank inside the MFWWTP. In <br /> addition, drainage and collection sumps are located inside the building to contain spills or leaks. <br /> These structures are pumped periodically to remove drain water and to maintain capacity of <br /> containment. <br /> Countermeasures: Kiln dust is stored outside the MFWWTP on the north side; can be used for <br /> neutralizing acid spills by building containment dikes around the spill. For larger spills, there are <br /> 60 bags of sand available in the MFWWTP, which can be used to build dikes around the spill. <br /> Minor spills inside the building can be treated with kiln dust after containment with sorbent <br /> booms or sand-bag dikes. <br /> Nearest Clean-up Equipment: A spill kit for acids is located in the MFWWTP building. A <br /> water supply and garden hose are also located in the MFWWTP building. Spill kits (2) are <br /> located in the mobile units driven by the Environmental Coordinator, WET Crew Foreman, and <br /> the pond technicians. <br /> Monitoring: A Climax employee accompanies all acid deliveries; therefore, unloading is <br /> continuously monitored. The tank is observed at least daily, otherwise. <br /> Reporting: Spills of H2SO4 greater than 1000 pounds (65 gallons) are subject to the reporting <br /> requirements outlined in Sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4 and any spill (regardless of quantity) which <br /> threatens waters of the State of Colorado must be reported as outlined in Sections 4.2, 4.3, and <br /> 4.4. All spills of sulfuric acid should be reported to the Environmental Coordinator immediately <br /> by using the "Spill Incident Report" form (Appendix 1). <br /> 42 <br />
