5.1.1.9 Calumet Oil
Description: Calumet Oil is a milling reagent used in flotation processes.
Location: Oil tank house north of the Mill Building; two 16,000-gallon tanks.
Spill Potential: Very low inside oil tank house; moderate at fill station inside Regrind Tunnel
where it's off-loaded.
Potential Volume Spilled: 16,000 gallons if one full tank spilled in oil tank house.
Prevention and Control: The Calumet Oil tanks are located in a large concrete vault below
grade in the oil tank house. This vault easily could contain the entire stored volume of Calumet
Oil. A floor drain connects with the mill process line should a spill occur. Spills of Calumet Oil
at the unloading hose in the Regrind Tunnel can be prevented by operator care and making sure
connections are secure between tanker and hose coupling.
Countermeasures: Small spills in the oil tank house can be cleaned up with floor dry and
shovels. Larger spills will require sorbent booms and floor dry. In the Regrind Tunnel, small
spills will be absorbed by floor dust and loose material comprising the road surface. Oil stained
dust should be scooped up with a shovel and disposed of properly. Larger spills will be
controlled by sorbent booms or dikes. Contact the Environmental Coordinator for proper
disposal methods (most likely the Climax landfill).
Nearest Clean-up Equipment: A spill kit is located in the west end of the mill building.
Monitoring: The oil tank house and the unloading hose and coupling in the Regrind.Tunnel are
checked daily during mill operation; monthly otherwise.
Reporting: All spills of Calumet Oil which threaten waters of the State of Colorado are subject
to the requirements of Sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4 of this SPCC Plan. All spills of 5 gallons or
more should be reported to the Environmental Coordinator by using the "Spill Incident Report"
form given in Appendix 1.
18
