Overview
In order for Chevron Mining to obtain final bond release at the Edna Mine, the Colorado
DRMS requires total vegetation cover at the mine to consist of less than 3% total noxious
weed cover. To that end, Habitat Management, Inc. was contracted for two herbicide
application visits to the mine in 2010. The first treatment took place from June 1 to June
5 and the second took place on July 15 and July 16. Over the course of treatments in 2009
and 2010, the following noxious weed species have been identified at the mine:
• Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense L.)
• Musk thistle (Carduus nutans L.)
• Houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale)
• Perennial pepperweed (Lepidium latifolium)
• Whitetop/hoary cress (Cardaria draba)
• Oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare)
This report summarizes Habitat Management's noxious weed management activities for
Chevron Mining during the 2010 growing season.
2010 Weed Management
Habitat Management, Inc., a licensed commercial pesticide applicator, performed weed
management activities at the Edna Mine. Qualified supervisor Chris Keough led a crew
of technicians in applying herbicide to manage noxious weeds from June 1 to June 5, and
on July 15 and 16, 2010. Weed management efforts were prioritized under the direction
of Steve Leach of Chevron Mining and Janet Binns of the Colorado DRMS.
Noxious weed infestations throughout the Moffat, West Ridge and Center Ridge areas of
the mine were scouted and designated for treatment approximately one week ahead of
each herbicide application visit. Herbicide applications were used to manage populations
of Canada thistle, musk thistle, whitetop (hoary cress), houndstongue and perennial
pepperweed throughout these areas.
2010 Edna Mine Weed Management Report 1 8/30/2010
