• Page 9
3.4 Sampling Equipment and Procedures
One bottom material sample will be obtained from within each two-acre grid area. Samples will
be collected at each sampling location from ground surface to a maximum of 18 inches below
ground surface or until bedrock is encountered. A hand auger will be used to collect the samples.
At locations where bedrock is near ground surface and a hand auger is insufficient, a stainless
steel shovel and bowl will be used to collect the samples.
The minimum sample size needed for analyses is approximately 5.5 kg. If this sample size is
unavailable within a grid, no sample will be taken as the potential impact from the bottom
material in such a grid would be negligible.
After collection of each sample, the sampling equipment will be properly cleaned and
decontaminated before reuse or storage according to procedures outlined in Appendix B. Table 4
lists required sample containers, sample volumes, and holding times.
3.5 Reservoir Bottom Material Analysis
•
The samples of bottom material will be analyzed for metals leachability, clay content, total
organic carbon, and total recoverable metals as summarized in Table 5. Fifty percent of the 30
collected samples will be archived in case additional verification is required. Laboratory analysis
will be completed according to EPA's CLP standards (EPA, 1989).
Table 6 summarizes analytical procedures and reporting limits. Appendix C contains the Metals
Leachability method.
•
CO2076
PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL
---Environmental
C:PROJECTSWI02-OOIULI176102.001[6120/96[
