ARR for ESWC'limar �`- <br /> START,EPA Region Vlll Rc--�tion: 0 <br /> Contract No.68-WS-0031 Date: 04/1998 <br /> Paec 2 of 37 <br /> • Collect surface water and sediment samples to test for impacts at these target locations during low <br /> flow; and <br /> • Collect two fish tissue samples from Tenmile Creek at the NPDES discharge point to act as a check <br /> for contaminant bioaccumulation and potential threat to receptors via human consumption. <br /> 3.0 BACKGROUND <br /> 3.1 SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION <br /> The CM site is located in Eagle,Lake,Park,and Summit Counties,Colorado. The site is situated <br /> along the Continental Divide where Fremont Pass crosses the Mosquito Range at the headwaters of <br /> the Arkansas River, Eagle River, and Tenmile Creek. The elevation of the CM site ranges from <br /> approximately 11,000 feet to 13,600 feet above sea level. The field office for the CM site, the <br /> Climax Station, is located in the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 11,T. 8 S.,R. <br /> 79 W., in Lake County,Colorado. The approximate coordinates.of the Climax Station are 39° 22' <br /> 12.0"N. latitude and 106' 10'45.0" W. longitude(U.S.Geological Survey(USGS) 1970a;USGS <br /> 1983). The CM site encompasses the entire town of Climax, Colorado, covering approximately <br /> 14,300 acres. The CM site is located approximately 70 miles west of Denver, Colorado,on State <br /> Highway 91, 11 miles south of Copper Mountain, Colorado, and 13 miles north of Leadville, <br /> Colorado(USGS 1970a;USGS 1983). <br /> Activities and facilities at the CM site include open pit mining,rock waste dumps,tailings delivery <br /> and deposition, industrial wastewater circuits and water collection systems,wastewater treatment <br /> facilities and the Climax Mill ore crushing and milling facilities(URS 1993;USGS 1970a;USGS <br /> 1983). <br /> 3.2 SITE HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK <br /> For a more detailed description of previous work at the site or its history, refer to Section 3.2,"Site <br /> History and Previous Work,"in the Analytical Results Report for the SSI completed by URS(URS <br /> 1994). <br /> 75-51119.00 <br /> F:\START\CLIMAX\Final.ARR\CLIMAX.TXT.wpd:bas <br />
